Born into a family of tourism guides, I have nurtured a passion for travel and sightseeing since childhood. I began my career as an operations manager at a cruise company, later transitioning to an airline ticket manager, and eventually moving into trip planning and arrangement. Since my first visit to Iceland in 2014, I have been consistently captivated by its charm. Currently, while arranging self-drive tours, I also serve as a group tour leader for trips to Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. When planning a trip, the most important balance for me is ensuring that while visiting as many places as possible, there is also ample time to relax and truly enjoy each destination.

What kind of country is Iceland?

Iceland is an island nation in the North Atlantic of Northern Europe that lives with volcanoes, just like Japan.

It is said that long ago, around the 9th century, the so-called Vikings from Scandinavia, including Norwegians, began to migrate and settle there.
In Iceland, active volcanic activity is still observed today, and during stable eruptions, you can even see flowing magma. It is also known as an eco-friendly country that utilizes geothermal energy from volcanoes.

In the capital city of Reykjavik, you can find the Hallgrímskirkja Church, a symbol of the city, the Perlan Museum where you can learn about Iceland's natural history, the Saga Museum where you can learn about Viking cultural history, and streets where you can enjoy shopping. If you venture out from Reykjavik, you can visit Vatnajökull National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can see Dettifoss, the largest waterfall in Europe, and glaciers. You can also visit Þingvellir National Park, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can see the exposed section of the Earth's rift between the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate. These places will surely amaze you with the grandeur of nature's beauty.
As expected of a country with volcanoes, there are also hot spring facilities. The 'Blue Lagoon,' where you can enjoy silica packs, is a highly popular spot in Iceland that features a hot spring and spa where you can enter wearing a swimsuit.

Because it is near the Arctic Circle, Iceland has long days in summer and very short days in winter.
Even in summer, it only reaches about 20 degrees, so it is very comfortable. Winter is a bit cold, but thanks to geothermal heating, you can live comfortably. At night, you can sometimes see the aurora.

Please create your own unique journey to enjoy the majestic nature rarely seen in Japan, such as glaciers, fjords, and endless grasslands, by consulting with a local coordinator.
It is sure to become an unforgettable extraordinary experience.

Things to be curious about when traveling to Iceland.

Cash, Cards, and Currency Exchange
The local currency is the Icelandic króna.
In the capital Reykjavik and tourist areas, Visa and Master credit cards can be used. For small transactions, having cash might be convenient. You can bring Euros or US Dollars from Japan and exchange them locally, or withdraw money from ATMs on-site.
Tips
There is no tipping culture. There may be a fee when using the restroom.
If you receive good service from a guide or similar, they will likely appreciate it if you give them a small tip.
Safety
The safety in Iceland is generally considered good, but there have been cases where travelers have fallen victim to robbery or assault. It is important to exercise sufficient caution without overestimating the favorable safety conditions. Regardless of the status of hotels or restaurants, do not place your bags or other belongings at your feet and take your eyes off them, or leave your possessions on chairs or tables and walk away from your seat. Additionally, be cautious when going out to busy downtown areas on weekends.
Clothing
It is much cooler than Japan, with the highest temperature around 20 degrees even in summer. The weather changes easily, and it rains as well, so having rain gear or an outerwear like a windbreaker will give you peace of mind.
Since the sunlight is strong, it is reassuring to have sunglasses or sunscreen. In summer, the days are long, and in winter, the days become extremely short, so make sure to bring proper winter clothing.
Things to Bring
Multi-plug, regular medication, mobile battery, overseas travel insurance, jacket, sun protection, rain gear, swimsuit (if visiting a hot spring)
Visa Requirements and Arrangements
Since a visa exemption agreement has been concluded between Japan and Iceland, obtaining a visa is not required for stays of up to three months for purposes such as tourism or visiting acquaintances.
Required Vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for travel.
